I see, I see, this really is horror genre. By all means, I'm starting to get just how bad it would be if the secrets of magic were revealed since magic seems to consistently turn folks odd like this. Birth rate would fall well below replacement if most people were too creepy to breed.

In horror genre works magic itself is creepy, and the guy is a wizard who claimed to be reading forgotten lore. There's probably more to it than that but I'd point at magic as the likely prime culprit.
