There are three distinct branches of Project ARTEMIS (also known as "the Shroud"): Investigations, Tactical, and Support. Agent King (the blonde one) is a member of the Investigations branch (as are all of the MiBs). Carter Lake, for example, is Tactical. And our newest featured character here, Jabari Arafa, is a member of Support. Specifically, he is a "magent" (a portmanteau of mage and agent), which is an agent versed in the arcane arts but not involved in field operations.

Bishop is in charge of all three branches. Johnson usually heads up Investigations, Lake is the Tactical commander, and Dr. Baker technically heads up the Support group, though each subdivision has its own group leader.

The funny-looking suit Mr. Arafa is wearing is basically the magical equivalent of a hazmat suit. Wearing them is standard operating procedure where present but unidentified energy is concerned.

So, if anyone ever tried the old "Did it hurt when you fell from Heaven?" pickup line on Kadira, this would actually be closer to the truth than intended... ;-D

Also, I like the seeming contradiction of "terribly beautiful"!
Firstly because angels in older religious texts are often described as entities that are quite more bizarre than just humanoids with bird wings sticking out of their shoulders.
And secondly it reminds me of Galadriel's speech when Frodo offers her the Ring. ("...not dark but beautiful and terrible as the dawn!")

I can imagine a scene in a sillier/more over the top version of Autumn Bay where someone tries that line and she pulls out a flaming sword or some such.

Those are actually two of the reasons we went with that phrasing. Angels are formed from the infinite emanations of creation, which also ties into it.

Fun angelic fact: In Jewish lore, "cherubs"--usually depicted in Renaissance art as fat little naked boys--were the warrior angels. The angel that killed the firstborn of Egypt (an event that cause the Pharaoh to release the Israelites) and the one who annihilated an army besieging Jerusalem, were both cherubs.

Talk about "artistic license". ^^

Our cherubim are most decidedly closer to the original incarnation, not the weird baby things. :)

(I could go on about the various choirs of angels, but I shan't.)

Cherubim that look like babies but are at the same time super-badass warriors would be an interesting concept though... :-D

Wait, wait, wait! So Bishop's team that confronted Chaos included the heads of at least two of the three branches of the Shroud, and he, himself, is the commander if a much larger organization than I realized? This situation reminds me strongly of the original Star Trek TV show where the most important and irreplaceable characters were the ones endangering themselves on the planet surfaces.

"Good leader", Bishop is. "Good administrator" is bit more shaky.....

On the other hand, I would be remiss if I didn't reference the masterful use of reflections and light sourcing here--delicious. :)

Yes, Team Alpha includes department heads.

A couple of comments on that front:

1) Team Alpha is supposed to be the best of the best of the best with honors in the Shroud. They are the types that would naturally rise to the top of the organization.

2) Like any good bureaucracy, there are redundancies built in (which we will actually see in action in an upcoming page). Basically, there are multiple people ready to step into a position suddenly vacated through misadventure.

3) There was a discussion concerning Bishop between myself and lirvilas during the pre-reboot version concerning the phrase "terrible at admin". Bishop does not claim to be good at admin.

4) There are far worse fates for a piece of serial fiction than to be compared to Star Trek. If only we had their numbers...

And lastly, thanks! :D

Yeah, I was under the impression that Bishop led a squad of Shroudies, not the whole ball of wax.

I think I got that idea from the distant mists of antiquity, and didn't upgrade the experience when you did. ><

For the record, I loved Star Trek. It broke my heart when the jerks at NBC first shafted it, then cancelled it. >:(

I would be lying if I said there is no Star Trek influence in AB. Most specifically, I see this branch of the Shroud running similarly to the Enterprise D, where the Captain (Director Shelby) is mostly involved in administrative and "diplomatic" matters and stays with the "ship" while the First Officer (Bishop) leads the away teams, which are usually made up of mostly bridge officers, but you see a lot of other crew members.

So you're saying Mr. Afari is wearing....armor?

Only in so far as you would consider a hazmat suit to be armor. So, "yes, in a manner of speaking".

For actual tactical armor, see Agent Lake during the Halverson and Golden Star raids.

Agent King again with the greenish tinge to her gear... I foresee more bad times for the Shroud.

The Shroud has a tendency to appropriate technology when and where they find it (after it's been thoroughly vetted, of course).

There is a good chance that King's earrings came from some Majestic-12 compound or some other Grey-affiliated faction.

Glowy stuff in AB is color-coded for your convenience. :)

Green is eldritch or alien. Blue is humanistic or magical. Yellow is non-eldritch but still other-than humanistic (I can't divulge the precise details, but look closely at everything related to Sandros and the associated food schemes. Those are not a mistake.)
