Let's be clear: as far as the Shadowlight League is concerned, Sophie outranks Mercy. This is ironic, since Mercy trained Sophie. Also, Mercy is not used to being overruled like this (she usually works alone).

Also, Sophie is right. It is tricky dealing with parachronic matters.

So where could they get a bunch more people to help with this on short notice?

Well, let's see:
-Wizards of the Coast is too far away, and probably doesn't have any actual wizards in it. (Unless they do in this world just because.)
-University professors from Miskatonic are all probably really drunk or asleep by now, so they're not a good resource to tap at the moment.
-It's after school hours so Ron, Hermione and Harry should be available as long as they're not busy with something else. No sale?
-Go try to get the MIBs to do something useful? Hahahahaha!

- Harry Dresden is probably on a case.
- John Constantine is probably balls deep in his own mess
- Willow Rosenberg is helping Buffy.
- Sabrina Spellman is dealing her own stuff.
- Samantha Stevens hasn't been heard from in decades...

Nope, not "Multicellulars in Black". I mean they ARE, but that's not what it means. :P

Is Sophie the deputy head of station at the AB Shadowlight organization?

Or is this hierarchy based on something less rigid? ("She's the most sober person in the room" etc.)

You got it the first time, sir. She's Dr. Armstrong's right hand, and would step up, at least in an acting capacity, if something happened to her boss. This is part of the reason she doesn't do as much field work, but a ton of logistics, intel analysis, and admin.

Also, she DOES tend to be the most sober. Unless you count tea. She has been known to drink a prodigious amount of that at times... :)

Lemme guess: some at Shadowlight say Mercy needs to drive a desk if she wants to advance her career; others say they might as well use up Mercy in field operations since she wouldn't last six months in a supervisory position...

If Mercy had to ride a desk, she would eat a gun. And she HATES guns.

She has too little use for the rules to administrate. That may come back to bite her.

To be fair, the walls between reality in Autumn Bay are like pre-ripped jeans, so another tear or two might not even be noticed. Then again, fashionably pre-ripped magic realism beats an outright descent into torn up exposed cosmic horror.

That would be... memorable, but I think Mercy was thinking more along the lines of loud explosions, walls of fire, and miscellaneous objects traveling in many directions at almost supersonic speeds.
