Are abandoned subway tunnels common?

They are in some EU countries because during the technological expansion and when subway trains started, they dug up tunnels like maniacs all over the place but later realized only some are actually needed. So a lot of forks got closed.
I am guessing that happened almost everywhere.

I know there are a number of cities in the U.S. that have such tunnels, so it seemed alright to use them in AB. I don't know if they would be called "common" though...

I've spent enough time eating fast-in a park after it gets dark. I just wanted to leave enough to differentiate the characters. In general, my main concern for any given scene is mood.
