A little "time passes while we do stuff montage" here...

I feel REALLY sorry for Ghoul every time I look at that second panel.

Time to be honest. Mercy is off to face down unknown odds with the help of whatever she, Vincent, and Ghoul could create over a few days, and she can't be sure that the people that she is trying to rescue are still alive. And this is what she does for a living...

And perhaps a bit of burn creme. And a clean bandage. It's like a second degree burn...

Are we going to get a list of what all those charms and wards are, eventually? I'm sure there's more to it than just an elder sign and a few contingency-release spells which will summon impossible colours when things go sufficiently hairy.

We shall see the things in action! For effect, you, our amazing readership, will discover them as the Starry Wisdom does...

Oh cool, stuff behind the curtain because you're trying to set up a surprise. I can dig it.

Glowing eyes... yes, we certainly feature that. Often on girls. :P

Yay, training montage! (Or rather preparation montage.)
*puts cassette tape with "Eye of the Tiger" into the walkman*

And Ghoul learned the important lesson that handling magic lightning isn't as easy (and save!) as it always looks in the movies!

Buffy: "I'm just worried this whole session is going to turn into some training montage from an 80s movie."

Giles: "Well, if we hear any inspirational power chords, we'll just lie down until they go away."

And yes, it is important for a kindermage to experience setbacks and pain. I mean, just look at Hogwarts, where almost anything can hurt, maim, or possibly kill young wizards and witches...

So Mercy is going against a very nasty gang, sponsored by an even nastier organization, to take from them something they badly want/need?

They are SO screwed. ^^

Correction: She's going against the ORGANIZATION to take from them something they badly want/need. The gang is, at this point, off the radar.

And yes, it is possible, if you know what you are doing, to draw some magickal charge from the actual act of going against great odds. The real question is, is it enough to overcome said odds.

I sincerely hope so, heroic death in combat against unfavourable odds trying to rescue kidnapped people and avert a greater disaster isn't the right kind of death for Mercy Black.

Ouch, that second panel looks painful for Ghoul... Meanwhile, Vincent doesn't even look like he cares >__>

It is! And Vincent... well, let's just say "empathy" is not high on the list of attributes commonly associated with Vincent Whateley.

Thanks!

It's always tricky balancing the amount of world-building versus storytelling versus character bits. When things go well it all blends.
