Dave's Faves: Webcomic Edition #1 - Alvery Nerveaux's Secret Files
by Professor Etheric

Hello, beings!

I decided I wanted to try something new, so here's a section of my nifty blog I call Dave's Faves.  It's where I will basically say some stuff, both good and bad, about things I enjoy and hope that maybe, just maybe, I can turn someone on to said things.  Or give people reasons NOT to get into them.  The choice is ultimately in the hands of the individual.

Since this blog is attached to my webcomic, I figured it was only fitting to start with webcomics.

So let's start with a fairly new cntry into the game, a spy-thriller parody called Alvery Nerveaux's Secret Files.

What does it have to say for itself?  Well, let's take a look at its profile on Comic Fury:

"Alvery Nerveaux, agent of WORLDPOL, fights against the forces of EMPRESS, an organization devoted to creating chaos in order to establish a new Napoleonic Empire. What's a secret agent to do when she's more skilled with a D20 than a Walther PPK? Besides throw dice at people, that is. Spying and geekiness, every week!"

So what's the real deal?

In fairly short order, we are introduced to our heroine, Alvery Nerveaux.  Specifically, we are introduced to her absence.  From the intial scene, we find that she is clumsy, absent-minded, and obsessed with a small town and our villain, Adrienne Renelsoir.  She gets the go ahead to investigate, largely to get her out of her superior's hair.

We then cut to Ms. Renelsoir and a glimpse into her nefarious plans for, what else, WORLD DOMINATION!

We have also met her two main henchmen and a hireling.

As I said, it's a fairly young comic, and really just getting going.

Why do I like this thing?

It's fun, well rendered, and I have a soft spot for old-school spy stuff, ESPECIALLY when silly-awesome acronyms are involved. (Adrienne's organization is called E.M.P.R.E.S.S., which stands for Empress Majestic Program to Repress Excessively Stupid Subects.  Yes, she used the acronym word in the acronym.  It's her favorite word, apparently, according to the author.)  Also, our heroine is an unabashed geek, which endears her to me even more.

It looks like we may see a rotating cast of hirelings, which would be another great touch (we have yet, as of this writing, to see the first one in action, but Monday Mourning seems like she just might be AWESOME).

Why someone might turn away:

There are a few things that need to be said.  These aren't a problem for me, but I can see how they could be for others.  First, the comic is in black & white.  Second, if you like your stories to be serious business, this isn't for you.  Those are really the only potential downers I see (unless someone hates geeks and/or spies).

Seriously, guys.  Check it out.  I think you'll like it.
